Machias Bay Harvest Fair and Wine and Beer Tasting Festival

MACHIAS, Maine – The 2017 Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce Fifth Annual Harvest Fair and Wine and Beer Tasting Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23. It is sponsored by the Chamber, Machias River Brewing Company and The French Cellar.
The full day of fun begins with a Color Dash sponsored by Healthy Acadia. Registration is preferred in advance but can be made on the day of the event at 8 a.m. The dash begins at 9. For more information or to pre-register, contact Angela Fochesato at Healthy Acadia, 255.3741.
Also at 8 a.m. is the start of the 2nd Annual Machias Valley Airport Fly-in, which will be the kick-off a fundraising effort for runway reconstruction slated for 2018. On display will be locally and Maine owned planes, Maine Forest Service equipment and helicopter, and the Maine Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter. The helicopter will be on display with the other equipment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The heart of the Harvest Fair is the vendor area. More than two dozen craft and artisan vendors will open their booths at 10 a.m. All vendors will be located in the grassy areas around the Chamber’s 1898 train station. Vendors include five area farms with their harvests: Starboard Farm, Jesse’s Pumpkins, Skunk Ridge Farms, Savage Forest Farm, and Wild Wind Farm. Other craft and artisan vendors include Bayside Chocolates, Sassy Molassey Peanut Butter, LuLaroe, handspun yarns, jewelry stained glass, mosaics, handmade dog collars and leashes, Scentsy, photography, wreaths, candles, handmade signs, woodworking, knitted items, food and massage.
Throughout the day, live music will be played at the box cars. Duane Ingalls has created a diverse lineup of musicians, which includes Clif-Tone Moser (bass), Lauren Koss-Leavitt (voice, ukulele), Stephen Copel (guitar, lap-steel, mandolin, voice), Taylor Bridges and Doug Colbeth (guitar, keyboard, voices), and Duane Ingalls (guitar, banjo, mouth-harps, voice, dj-ing).
The annual Wine and Beer Tasting will be held in the Lee Pellon Center next to the harvest fair vendors from 2-5 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by Machias River Brewing Company, which will be bringing a selection of their local beers, and The French Cellar. There will be more than 30 wines for tasting, as well as a collection of beers from breweries across the state. The admission is $25 and glasses are provided. No one under 21 will be allowed inside the center. Food will be provided by Sodexco, the food service provider for the University of Maine at Machias.
At 10 a.m., due to generous underwriting by Rotary International, the very popular Pumpkin Chucking Contest will return this year, sponsored by the Machias chapter of the Rotary. Competitors are building trebuchets and catapults to launch pumpkins into Machias Bay at the public boat launch on Rt 1 by the causeway. There is no fee to enter but teams should call 255.4402 to register.
The Harvest Fair was created five years ago to help fund the onging renovations of Station 1898, the 119-year-old train station that is the Chamber’s home office. The station will be open for visitors all day on Sept. 23.
