Twelve (12) members of a Museum Management Class at the University of Maine at Machias, led by Professor Bernie Vinzani, have created an exact scale diorama of Machias historic train station.  The 120 year old station was built in 1898 and the diorama illustrates the time period of 1950.

Reception will be held at the train station Wednesday, May 23rd from 5-6 p.m.  Students and Vinzani will be explaining the diorama and the process of creating a museum quality piece.  Members of the Station 1898 Railroaders, a hobby club looking to establish a railroad museum at the station, will also be on hand to welcome new members and provide information on their project.  Vinzani said the students used historic maps and photographs to recreate the station.  “There are lots of details,” he said, “including the storage shed, the semaphore, true location of railroad tracks.”  He said the display is HO scale and includes the two box cars that are currently at the station.

The station is currently the home of the Machias Chamber of Commerce and many donated/loaned historical items are displayed in the station.  The public is always welcome to visit.  For more information, call the Chamber at 255-4402.
