A Unique and Historic Town located in Downeast Maine
The word Machias in the Passamaquoddy language means “bad little falls”, which is representative of the beautiful and rugged waterfalls located on the Machias River in the center of the community. The falls provided the power to the historic mills that lined the waterway to the bay. As Machias has always been dependent upon the natural resources of the area for the growth of the community, the waterways and falls played a starring role in the lumber trade, fisheries, and shipping of goods. A unique blend of past and present, Machias still maintains many traditional jobs that have built upon the original culture of being inexplicably tied to the natural beauty and resources provided by both the land and sea.
Of balsam & blueberries, lobsters & lighthouses, puffins & whale watching, sunsets over the bay…More than the just the sights, smells, and sounds…It’s a feeling.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved Town Manager, Bill Kitchen, who served Machias with dedication and pride for many years. He passed away on September 9th, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him.
As a mark of respect, the Town Office will be closed. During this time, we encourage the community to reflect on Bills significant contributions to our town and to keep his family in your thoughts.
